Pioneers' passion is to bring the gospel to the unreached peoples: the more than two billion people worldwide who have never heard of Jesus before.
Internationally, the organization started in 1881 as North Africa Mission. After the Second World War the Middle East was added as a focus and the international name changed to Arab World Ministries. In 2010, the focus expanded to include the whole world through the merger with Pioneers International.
The Dutch office was founded in 1970 as the North Africa Mission Netherlands foundation, and in 1987 it was renamed the Arab World Mission Netherlands, abbreviated AWZ in Dutch. Since 2021 the name AWZ changed to Stichting Pioneers (Foundation Pioneers).
Stichting Pioneers is a Dutch foundation and the legal umbrella (entity) for its two mobilisation offices: Pioneers Nederland (PINL) and Pioneers Europe (PIEU).
Stichting Pioneers works interdenominationally, on a non-profit basis, and is a member of the Dutch mission umbrella MissieNederland.
